What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, your first step should always be to call an emergency dental practice, like Cambridge City Dental. Here are some common emergency dental scenarios and what you can do whilst you wait for further instruction from a dentist.

  • Sometimes people think toothaches are just a minor issue but they are important to address as they could also be an indication of an underlying dental problem such as an infection or decay. Therefore, they should never be ignored. If you’re waiting to see a dentist for a toothache, you could try rinsing your mouth with warm salty water and take over the counter pain relief to help ease symptoms whilst you wait for their further instructions.

  • We’ve treated various broken tooth related issues resulting from injuries such as falls, sports accidents or biting on hard objects. If you’ve cracked your tooth, you can apply a cold compress to the affected cheek and take over the counter pain relief to help ease symptoms. If you’ve got fragments of the broken tooth, try keeping them safe in a container or ziplock bag to bring to your dentist.

  • If a tooth gets knocked out, don’t delay seeing an emergency dentist, time is critical. Taking fast action can greatly increase the chances of saving the tooth. Handle the tooth by the crown without touching the root, rinse it gently in milk if dirty, and attempt to reinsert it into the socket whilst you wait. If you can’t place it back into the socket, try to keep it moist in a glass or container of milk until you can get to a dentist or follow any specific instructions they have. Doing so helps to preserve the tooth and give the dentist the best chance of being able to reattach it.

  • If you suspect a dental abscess, rinse your mouth with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, and seek immediate dental attention to prevent further complications.

  • If you lose a filling or dental crown, you should try to get to an emergency dentist as soon as possible. Ensure you keep the area clean and avoid chewing or putting any pressure on the affected tooth whilst you wait.

Emergency Dental FAQs

  • There are many types of dental emergencies. Here are some common problems we see in emergency patients.

    • A lost filling or tooth crown

    • Gum abscess

    • Broken or knocked-out teeth

    • A sporting injury

    • Extreme and relentless pain

If you’re ever in doubt of whether your incident is a dental emergency, it’s best to contact our team immediately for an emergency dental appointment.

  • Whilst It’s impossible to fully prepare for a dental emergency, there are some things you can do in advance to better prepare for the situation. These include having an ice pack in the freezer, pain relief medication, and our phone number easily accessible.

  • If you can’t see a dentist immediately, there are some things you can do in the meantime. If you are experiencing tooth pain, you can apply a cold compress or take pain relief medication. Salt has antibacterial properties therefore, you could also try washing your mouth out with warm salty water as a pain relief measure.

  • In most incidents, we recommend phoning your local dentist first. If your dentist is unavailable for emergency dental care, then an after hours dental clinic might be more suitable, as not all hospitals will have a dentist available to treat you on the spot. However, if your dental emergency is more serious such as infections, fractures or dislocations to your jaw, you should go to your local hospital emergency room straight away or call 000 if life threatening.

  • The cost of your emergency dental visit will depend on the extent of the dental issue. But rest assured, we’ll always provide you with a price estimate before going ahead with any dental service. If you have private health coverage for dental, your health fund may also cover a portion of any emergency dental treatment required.
